What We Have Been Doing In School

We have been really enjoying school! Last week we learned about the state of Louisiana. We listened to jazz music from Louis Armstrong and made Red Beans & Rice. It turned out real yummy! The boys loved it!

Last week Jonah learned about turtles and how we should not quit but preserve. Here is Jonah's badge he made for Turtle Week.

For science we did a seed experiment by putting seeds on a plate with a dry napkin and covering it with foil. Then we placed seeds on another plate with a wet napkin and covered it with foil as well. With two identical situations we saw what happens to seeds with water and seeds without water.

Here Cainen made a Lamb with the Bible verse he has been memorizing.

Cainen also learned about how the New England Primer was the book used in homes and schools. He learned how it taught moral values as well as the alphabet, often using ideas from the Bible. I also had him make a horn book!

Nest Week In My Father's World

Jonah really enjoyed making his nest badge to wear. He was really excited about wearing it. He also painted a tree and then added torn paper leaves and some cotton clouds. I had bought some Spanish Moss at Michaels and it worked out great for the nests. Jonah gets so excited about school and begs to do it everyday!

Apple Week

We are just now done with Apple Week in My Father's World K. Jonah has mostly been doing the projects in Adventures with his brother. I plan on getting caught up before summer. Jonah will be officially starting Kindergarten this fall. I am very excited! He really enjoyed learning about apples. We talked about the fruits of the Spirit and how we as God's children will have fruit in our lives just like apple trees. We also taste tested the apples to see which one tasted the best. We also made a tree by tracing Jonah's hand for the trunk and branches. I read a book about Johnny Appleseed and then Jonah colored a picture of him. Jonah does such a great job coloring, he colors better than I do! All the boys in my life are such good artists!

Week 14 In Adventures

Last week in Adventures we learned about Delaware, Pennsylvania and Georgia. On the day in which we learned about PA, Cainen got to make the Liberty Bell. He did such a great job writing the scripture verse on the bell. He has beautiful handwriting, much better than mine I dare say. It was a lot of fun making it! For Georgia, we made a yummy peach cobbler, since GA is known for peaches. Yesterday we learned about Connecticut and their state bird the robin. So, we made robin nests that the boys could eat! For grass we used shredded wheat, for twigs we used chow mein noodles, for mud we used melted chocolate and peanut butter. As always Jonah was thrilled about eating this interesting creation of his but Cainen, not so much! This week I am going to have the boys do some nature study outside. Using their binoculars, we will be able to look for birds and journal our findings. Oh, the joys of homeschooling!

History & Science Comes Alive

In My Father's World, Cainen & Jonah got to make a quill pen and ink made from berries. We studied the Declaration of Independence and we discussed how Benjamin Franklin helped Thomas Jefferson write it. We talked about John Hancock's very large signature and why he choose to write so big. Afterwards they got to write their own signature.

We also got to make Johnny Cakes together. This was a lot of fun and tasted yummy! Although Cainen didn't care for the apple butter (he doesn't like sweets)Jonah and I LOVED it! Johnny Cakes were a common food to eat during the time of George Washington . There are pancakes made from corn. They tasted a lot like Haste Pudding!

Cainen LOVES George Washington! So when I saw this George Washington craft at Joanne's, I knew I needed to buy it. Cainen loves to learn about this great leader and how he was called, "Bullet Proof Washington"

These were the boys Science experiments. Using a cucumber, we poured sugar on top to see that sugar soaks up water so well that it can draw water out of the cucumber.

We also learned that water can climb. We used sugar cubes and food coloring and watched as the water climbed up the sugar tower.

Leaf Week & Benjamin Franklin

Jonah made a space helmet in our last day of "moon week" He was so excited! The boys always get a kick out of reading how "Little Bear" pretended he went to the moon.

Jonah is doing a leaf rubbing.

Here he traced around a leaf and then colored it in.

Here is Jonah's leaf badge!

Cainen has been learing about Benjamin Franklin! I really enjoyed reading Ingri & Edgar D'Aulaire's book from Beautiful Feet! It has been one of my favorites!

Cainen got to make an almanac!

Cainen did a lot of copy work from proverbs and quotes from Ben and drew pictures of his inventions.

Cainen actually made this canoe two weeks ago but I thought I'd add it too!

Moon Week In K

After reading, "Good Night Moon" I had Jonah make this lapbook. It turned out real cute!

I got this idea from a friend of mine and thought it was such a cute idea. Jonah of course loved making this "moon cake"

Cainen wanted to help put the craters on the moon's surface.

Both the boys made their own astronaut and Jonah made the American flag.

It was out of this world!

Mayflower and Pilgrims In Adventures

This week in school,Cainen has been learning about Squanto and the Pilgrims. Today we planted three popcorn kernels and three fish crackers just like how Squanto taught the Pilgrims. Well, except they used real fish to fertilize the corn! I wasn't overly excited about using real dead fish to plant. So.... needless to say I was pretty content using crackers instead.

I decided to bring some corn with us, so Jonah could get more of a understanding as to what happens after we plant the corn.

Someone looks happy!

In Adventures, My Father's World asked that we make paper Tepees and a Wigwan. Cainen had already done that last year when we did, "American Story 1" from Winter Promise. So we decided to do this project instead. It turned out great!

Cainen made a sun with a paper plate, wax paper & crayon shavings. He then painted it and wrote, "Jesus Is The Light Of The World"

Here is Cainen's copywork & picture study page from, "Primary Language Lessons"

For our book basket time, I have been reading the books from Beautiful Feet. The books go along perfectly with My Father's World. In addition to using MFW timeline, I also am having Cainen do the time line from BF as well! He is doing such a great job!
